Hooray!

Inspired by my sister's blog post, I've decided to post my own political-ish thought.

Hooray for the Dixie Chicks' 5 Grammy wins last night for their record and song (click on the picture to see the performance), "Not Ready To Make Nice." This song, spurred by the extreme backlash to lead singer, Natalie Maines', comments about George Bush, talks about their reaction and feelings about the whole incident. A small, harmless comment made, turned into an enormous hoopla where country music stations actually banned the Chicks and their music. So much for being American and the whole freedom of speech thing.

Even though I have always been a fan of the Dixie Chicks, I was surprised by their sweep of the Grammys last night, and thought what a (profound) statement this is making about the current state of our country and the current administration. Natalie Maines said last night, "this is so weird to be here and not have a genre" since after the comments she made, their fan base completely changed. They don't tour primarily in the south anymore, but play more in big stadiums in big (northern and western) cities. Because they were essentially abandoned by their country music fans and stations, they have become so much more and so much bigger than I think that maybe even they could have imagined.

No matter what your politics are, you have to appreciate the fact that we live in a country where we CAN say what we want. Or at least theoretically. Yes, there may be backlash, but you have the right to your opinion, and should be able to voice that. And yes, some may think that the only reason they won so many awards for this amazing album is the whole Hollywood-liberal-minded thing, but no matter what, hopefully this will make people NOTICE and THINK.

I was sooooo happy for them last night! They truly deserved it. It kinda blows my mind, considering so many other actors / actresses / singers speak their minds about politics all the time. Not sure why such the backlash. I really think the south is predominately Republican and god forbid a southerner be democractic or liberal. Anyways, I am just so happy for them.. and to quote The Simpsons "He He".. Loved it!

It was not only the Hollywood, California scene that voted for the DIXIE CHICKS. The Academy consists of voters all over the USA.
Their wins reaffirm what we all feel - that in AMERICA, the land that we live in and fight for, that freedom of speech is a RIGHT that we all enjoy, be it liberal, conservative, or whatever.
Country Music is not limited to the SOUTH per se, unfortunately, the narrow minded politics of too few, influenced the minds of too many.

Here here! I 100% agree! (And love what mom said about the narrow minded politics of too few...). "Shut Up and Sing" comes out on DVD next tues and I hope that people will see it. What happened to the Dixie Chicks was the equivalent of a public lynching-- which should never happen in America. The dvd puts "the incident" in perspective-- they're mothers, they're wives, they're humans, they're American.
